Event Details

As we celebrate 250 years of Freedom and Independence, come learn how St. Johns County’s rural and agricultural communities of Spuds, Elkton, Armstrong, and Hastings contributed to our collective success with a presentation by Derek Boyd Hankerson from the Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationist Board of St. Johns and Palm Beach Counties.

This includes how red and black patriots known as Seminole Maroons or Black Seminoles defended themselves against oppression during the second Seminole war, and the role St. Johns County played during the Presidential Administrations of James Monroe (Monroe Doctrine), and President Andrew Jackson during the Jacksonian Democrat era.

These events occurred between 1818-1845 when Florida became a state. St. Johns County was established as one of Florida’s two original counties following the U. S. acquiring Florida from Spain in 1821.
