Program Description

Event Details

We’re thrilled to welcome Mr. Justin Ruger, beekeeper and children’s book author, to our library for a fun-filled and educational program about honeybees! Justin's inspiring journey began after a traumatic brain injury and stroke changed his life, shifting his career from nuclear physics to sharing his passion for beekeeping with the world. Motivated by the memory of his late aunt, Shirley, Justin wrote a series of children’s books that teach kids about the fascinating world of honeybees and beekeeping.

Through the nonprofit organization Accessible Beekeeping, Justin helps people of all abilities connect with nature and find joy through beekeeping. Despite facing ongoing health challenges, Justin is determined to inspire the next generation of beekeepers through his educational books and podcast, Accessible Beekeeping and More!

Program Activities:

Reading Time:

Enjoy readings from two of Justin’s children's books:

      Henry Meet a Honey Bee

      Honey Teaches Beekeeping to Kids

After the readings, Justin will be available for a book signing!

Observation Hive:

Experience the magic of honeybees up close with our onsite observation hive. Kids will be able to safely watch the bees at work, all while being protected from any harm.

Pollination Garden:

Kids can make their own pollinator wildflower seed mix planter to take home - helping the environment one flower at a time!

Ask a Beekeeper:

Have questions about beekeeping? Kids will have the opportunity to ask a beekeeper about bees, beekeeping, and all things honey-related.

No registration required. This program is limited to 50 participants on a first come, first served basis. If you have questions, please contact Rachel at rbarman@sjcfl.us or call the Main Library at 904-827-6940.
